SPARTANS LOSE ON THE ROAD AGAINST NO. 6 SASKATCHEWAN

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Scoring 35 points in the third quarter, the No. 6 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the visiting Trinity Western University Spartans 95-49 Friday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.
 
With the win, the Huskies improve to 11-4 on the season and extend its win streak to seven games. Trinity Western drops to 1-14.
 
Trinity Western opened the scoring in the game with a Taylor Heinrichs (Port Moody, B.C.) three but Saskatchewan scored on its next three possessions to take control of the game. By the end of the frame, the Huskies led 22-7.  
 
The Spartans found the basket more frequently in the second quarter scoring just five less points than Saskatchewan at 19-14 to trail 41-21 at halftime. The Huskies came out strong in the second half outscoring the Spartans 35-14 in the third quarter to grow their already large lead to 76-35. The Huskies also outscored Trinity Western 19-14 in the fourth to cruise to the 46-point win.

For the Spartans, it is their most lopsided regular season loss in program history. TWU's 49-point showing was also its lowest point total in a Canada West game since Oct. 30, 2009, when they lost to UBC 71-44.
 
Evan Ostertag led the Huskies in scoring with 20 points off the bench in the victory. Matthew Forbes was equally impressive, tallying 19 points while hitting all 10 of his free throws and all four of his field goals. Trevor Severinski and Dadrian Collins led Saskatchewan on the boards with six rebounds each.
 
Peter Spangehl (Surrey, B.C.), Nicholas Tancon (Comox, B.C.) and Tyus Allen (White Rock, B.C.) each scored seven points for the Spartans. Tancon also added a game-high seven rebounds.
 
Saskatchewan made the Spartans pay for mistakes scoring 27 points from Trinity Western's 19 turnovers. The Spartans finished the game shooting just 27 per cent, while Saskatchewan shot at 47 per cent.
 
The two teams will meet again Saturday night at the PAC. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m.

Game Notes: The last time TWU lost by 46 points or more in any game was in September 2007, when the Spartans hosted UC Santa Barbara and lost 102-56 on Sept. 8 and 107-58 to a Blake Griffin-led Oklahoma side on Sept. 2…TWU's most lopsided loss previously was also against Saskatchewan, when the Spartans fell 104-66 on Jan. 18, 2008
