Box Score VANCOUVER – The Trinity Western men's basketball remains winless on the season after losing 94-69 against UBC Friday night at War Memorial Gym.
The Spartans (0-3) fell behind 26-13 in the first quarter and never recovered as UBC (2-1) cruised to a convincing 25-point win.
TWU's Dean Richey (Spokane, Wash.) and Lucas Mannes (Chilliwack, B.C.) led the Spartans with 14 points each while Patrick Vandervelden (Abbotsford, B.C.) had 10 points. Richey also had a team-high eight rebounds while Vandervelden had seven.
UBC had five players hit double digits in scoring, with Will Ondrik collecting a game-high 18 points.
As a team, TWU was held to 37 per cent shoot – 27-73 – while UBC shot 49.2 per cent from the field – 32-65.
The Thunderbirds out-rebounded TWU 55-32.
The Spartans trailed by 13 points after the first quarter before UBC extended its lead to 48-28 at halftime.
After UBC outscored TWU 23-18 in the third quarter, the Spartans pushed back in the fourth quarter, equaling the T-Birds 23 points in the final frame, but TWU never threatened to take momentum from UBC as the home side walked away with the win.
The two teams play in a rematch Saturday at 7 p.m. at UBC.
