SPARTANS DROP TWO TO WESMEN IN WINNIPEG

Box Score

WINNIPEG – The University of Winnipeg Wesmen men's basketball team dominated from start to finish in a 90-48 victory over the Trinity Western University Spartans Saturday afternoon in Winnipeg.

"Winnipeg played a great game. They shot the ball with lots of confidence. Which in a way made things more difficult for us," commented TWU head coach Aaron Muhic. "However in the second half when our team could've packed it in, we responded with energy and effort and a great team attitude. They chose to compete by diving on the floor for loose balls and competing on the defensive end of the floor. Matt Blackaby and Lucas Mannes led the way in that department."

The Wesmen reach the .500 level with a record of 3-3. Trinity Western remains winless at 0-6.

Fifth year wing Kelvin Smith (Los Angeles) led the Spartans with 12 points and seven rebounds. Matt Blackaby (Maple Ridge, B.C.) finished with eight points.

Fifth year forward Jelane Pryce led the Wesmen with 16 points. Fourth year guard Jamar Farley added 14 points, with four-three pointers and a team high six rebounds. Denzel Lynch-Blair finished with 12.

A hot shooting Wesmen team put up 27 points in the opening quarter while holding the Spartans to a paltry eight points.  Winnipeg continued their pin point shooting in the second quarter, outscoring the Spartans 25-16 to take a 52-24 lead into the halftime break.

Winnipeg connected on 18-of-30 (60 percent) from the field in the opening half while the Spartans struggled connecting on only 8-of-31 (26 percent).

The Wesmen would continue to control the game in the second half as they outscored the Spartans 38-24 in the final 20 minutes to close out the 90-48 victory.

"We need to put this one behind us and get ready for our next games."

Trinity Western will host the Saskatchewan Huskies this coming Thursday and Friday, while Winnipeg will have the bye next weekend and will be in action on Dec 4-5 on the road in Regina against the Cougars.
