Box Score EDMONTON – Alberta's sharp 3-point shooting was largely the difference Saturday as the Golden Bears knocked down 10 from beyond the arc, compared to just three by Trinity Western, as the home side earned an 83-60 win over the Spartans Saturday at the Saville Community Sports Centre.
The Spartans (1-15) were just three for 19 from outside the perimeter while Alberta (9-8) was 10 for 34 as the Bears cruised to a win over TWU for the second night in a row.
Kelvin Smith (Los Angeles) had a team-high 11 points for the Spartans on a night when TWU shot just 36.4 per cent (20-55) from the field. Vartan Tanielian (White Rock, B.C.) had nine points and Patrick Vandervelden (Abbotsford, B.C.) led the way on the glass with seven boards.
Alberta's Mamadou Gueye had a game-high 27 points while Brody Clarke added 16 points.
The Spartans were plagued by turnovers, committing 18 to Alberta's seven. TWU did have a 39-36 edge in rebounds.
TWU hung with the Bears through the first half as they trailed by only seven points at the break, down 42-35.
Alberta pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring TWU 24-15 to go ahead by 16 points heading to the final 10 minutes.
The Bears continued to push the pace in the fourth quarter, holding TWU to just 10 points as the home team rolled to a 23-point win.
TWU is back on the court Feb. 12-13 when it will host Manitoba in the Spartans last home weekend of the season.
