SPARTANS DEFEAT TIMBERWOLVES AT HOME

LANGLEY, B.C. – Propelled by two first half goals, the Trinity Western Spartans men's soccer team earned a 2-0 home victory over the UNBC Timberwolves Saturday at Chase Office Field.

Noah Kroeker (Calgary) and Gordon Grice (Burnaby, B.C.) both scored for the Spartans (7-4-1), while Sebastian Colyn (Langley) made six saves to earn his Canada West-leading sixth clean sheet.

The Spartans improve to 6-1-1 over their last eight games and now sit third in the Pacific Division. The Timberwolves record falls to 4-6-3.

Timberwolves goalkeeper Rob Goodey made 10 saves in the losing effort.

Kroeker got the Spartans on the board first in the 34th minute, after his shot just outside the Timberwolves box beat Goodey to the far left post to make it 1-0.

The Spartans then pushed their lead to 2-0 in the 45th minute, when Grice caught Goodey challenging out of the box, firing home a goal into the empty net from 25 yards out.

There was no looking back for TWU, as they continued their strong play into the second half to hold on for the victory.

TWU finished the night with an 20-11 edge in shots and 12-6 edge in shots on goal.

QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Mike Shearon
"I'm happy with the win today, and in seeing some impressive goals, too. Noah's goal was fantastic so I was super happy for him, and Gordon got one too that was nice. In the end, it is goals that change games, and I thought after the first goal we relaxed ourselves as a team, starting to play a little more instead of forcing things we were doing in the first half."

On responding from last nights draw:
"I don't know if there was a big difference from yesterday's game. We talked about making sure we kept the energy up throughout all 90 minutes, which I thought we did. We fixed a few things tactically to help sort out some of their possession, and we took our chances, which I probably thought we had less of compared to last night. In the end we'll take the big win, which is all that matters."

NOTABLE
  • With the draw, the Spartans move to 8-5-2 all time against UNBC.
  • TWU is now 4-1-1 this year at Chase Office Field.
