KAMLOOPS, British Columbia – Fourth year guard
Ja'Qualyn Gilbreath's (Amarillo, Texas) 31 points was not enough as the Trinity Western Spartans dropped their second game of the Canada West season 85-70 to the Thompson River WolfPack Saturday night at the Tournament Capital Centre in Kamloops, B.C.
The loss drops the Spartans to 0-2 after dropping the season opener Friday night, while the WolfPack remain perfect at 2-0.
In addition to Gilbreath's 31 points and four rebounds the Spartans also had solid games from second year guard
Gabe Mannes (Chilliwack, B.C.) with 17 points, and four rebounds and second year forward
Isaiah Reimer (Abbotsford, B.C.) with nine points. Joe Davis with 28 points and eight rebounds, Anton Bilous with 19 points and six rebounds, and Michael Rouault with nine points and 13 rebounds led the WolfPack.
The Spartans had a slow start trailing 18-3 early, but a 12-0 run to finish the final four minutes of the opening quarter got TWU back into the game. The two teams matched each other in the second quarter with TRU leading 36-33 at the half. The third quarter would prove to be the difference in the contest. Out of the break the WolfPack outscored the Spartans 23-10 to take a commanding 59-43 lead heading into the final 10 minutes. TWU was unable to overcome the 16 point deficit as TRU took the contest 85-70.
QUOTABLE
TWU coach Trevor Pridie
On tonight's game:
"I think rebounding is going to be a huge thing for us to get better at all year. With that said I like the pace we played with tonight and shot the ball fairly well."
On fouls:
"I think fouls shouldn't be a huge problem moving forward. TRU is one of the bigger teams we'll face all year, so I think as far as matchups go they pounded us inside a bit and killed us on the boards. We take a gamble when we play a smaller game and there's always going to be trade-offs.
On next week's home-opener
"We just need to keep building from this and keep moving forward. We'll watch film, see what we need to keep getting better on this week, and prepare for UNBC at home."
