SPARTANS SET FOR HOME OPENER AGAINST TIMBERWOLVES

LANGLEY, B.C. – The Spartans men's basketball team is set to make its long-awaited home opener Friday and Saturday at the Langley Events Centre. 
 
WEEKEND PREVIEW 
Friday, November 8th vs. UNBC – 8 p.m. (PT)
Saturday, November 9th vs. UNBC – 7 p.m. (PT)
 
THE WEEKEND STORY
  • Friday will be the first regular season home game for the Spartans under new head coach Trevor Pridie, who took over as the team's bench boss after a successful season as an assistant coach with Raptors 905.
  • TWU returns home after a pair of road losses to open the season against Thompson Rivers. 
  • Spartans guard Ja'Qualyn Gilbreath (Amarillo, Texas) will look to lead TWU's offence after posting 31 points (11-22 FG) in Saturdays loss to Thompson Rivers. 
  • TWU will look to contain Timberwolves guard Tyrell Laing, who was the 2017-18 Canada West Rookie of the Year, who posted 43 points over two games last weekend. 
  • The two teams last met Nov. 16-17 last season, with the Timberwolves winning both games at home (101-58, 98-82). 
  • TWU has lost their last six games against UNBC, with their last win coming at home on Nov. 16, 2013 (W 92-73). 
  • The Timberwolves finished 11th in Canada West last season with a 9-11 record.

About Spartan Athletics
As official members of U SPORTS, the Spartans currently compete in 11 sports in the Canada West conference, including women's and men's soccer, volleyball, basketball, cross country and track & field, as well as women's rugby sevens. TWU also competes in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) in men's hockey and as an independent team in men's rugby. The men's and women's hockey programs will begin playing in Canada West and U SPORTS in 2020-21. Since TWU entered U SPORTS in 1999, the Spartans have won 12 U SPORTS team championships and 27 Canada West team championships and two BCIHL championships.
