THIS DAY IN HISTORY | DOERKSEN SETS SCHOOL RECORD IN WIN

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western all-Canadian forward Jacob Doerksen had a school record breaking 42-point game Saturday night to lead the Spartans to a 114-89 win over Fraser Valley at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C.

The fifth year's (Abbotsford, B.C.) domination earned TWU its 10th win in a row and improved its overall record to 12-2. The loss drops Fraser Valley to 4-8 on the year.

After the first quarter, Doerksen had a fairly standardized eight points. But then the big man from Abbotsford, B.C. went off. Doerksen had 18 points in the second quarter alone, followed that up with a 15-point third quarter and then wrapped up his historic night with a six-point fourth quarter, breaking the eight-year old non-conference record of 41 points – held by Fraser Valley assistant coach Adam Friesen, who had his night against McMaster Oct. 25, 2002 – with a deep three-ball with just over four minutes left in the game.

Also helping the Spartans in the winning cause were guard Calvin Westbrook with 19 points, guard Daniel Horner with 15 points and forward Kyle Coston with 12 points and eight rebounds. Sam Freeman with 32 points and six rebounds, and Joel Friesen with 22 points and five rebounds led the Cascades in the loss.

The Spartans finished the night shooting 50.7 percent (38-75) from the field, 48.8 percent (20-41) from the three point line and 75 percent (18-24) from the foul line. While the Cascades shot 47.7 percent (31-65), 40.9 percent (9-22) and 69.2 percent (18-26) respectively.

TWU also had the edge in rebounding 41-35 and in steals 8-3.

The two teams were even after the opening quarter at 21-21, with TWU taking a slim 44-42 lead into the half time break. The second half was all Spartans as TWU sealed the game by outscore UFV 39-23 in the third quarter to take a commanding 83-65 lead into the final frame.

The Spartans will now head into the Christmas break before returning to Canada West action Jan. 7-8 in Victoria against the Vikes.

Game Notes: Doerksen also broke the old Canada West school conference record and his previous personal best of 38 points, which he set on November 7, 2008 in a 92-74 win over Saskatchewan at the David Enarson Gym.
