Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

SPARTANS FALL 4-0 TO UBC

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Trinity Western played their second game in as many days against UBC on Saturday, losing 4-0 at the Doug Mitchell Sports Centre. UBC goaltender Rylan Toth was outstanding, stopping all 15 of TWU's shots to carry the Thunderbirds to a 2-0 win.

The Spartans (0-2) were unable to apply substantial pressure on UBC's (2-0) airtight defensive line throughout the duration of Saturday's game.

UBC got to work quickly as two goals in the first period put the Spartans on their back foot early in the game. UBC, who played a solid defensive game against the Spartans, were able to do so without many trips to the penalty box.

With TWU going on the power play late in the third period, the Spartans were unable to convert, pulling goaltender Berk Berkeliev (Calgary) twice to move to a six on four advantage. UBC scored on the empty net both times to draw the game to a 4-0 loss for the Spartans.

NOTABLE
  • Berk Berkeliev takes a loss after Saturday's match against UBC, but his performance was strong. The first-year goaltender stopped 31 of 33 shots he faced, constantly keeping the Spartans in the game against their speedy opposition.
QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Barret Kropf
"We came out a little timid. We can't afford to give opposing teams that much grace, forcing us back on our heels. We need to be confident and remain physical.

"We need to play like we belong, like we know we can do. A lot of work to do before next weekend as we work hard to remain confident for the entire 60 minutes. We know we can do that, we just need to be better through the whole game."

UP NEXT
The Spartans are coming home next weekend to play against Mount Royal at the Langley Events Centre (Oct. 25th) and the George Preston Recreation Centre (Oct. 26th).
