REGINA – Trinity Western's women's hockey captain
Neisha Germann (Lloydminster, Alta.) scored for the Spartans, but Regina tallied the game-winner midway through the third period to secure a 2-1 victory for the Cougars Friday at the Co-Operators Centre.
The Cougars Lauren Focht scored at 9:39 of the third period to give Regina (3-4) the lead, and the home side held off the Spartans (1-6) the rest of the way.
Jordan Kulbida opened the scoring 1:12 into the game, but Germann was able to equalize at 8:16 of the second period, with TWU's
Olivia Leier (Regina) and
Brooklyn Anderson (Shellbrook, Sask.) picking up assists.
Kate Fawcett (Tottenham, Ont.) made 33 saves for the Spartans, while Regina's Arden Kliewer stopped 22 of the 23 shots she faced.
TWU was one for five on the power play, while Regina was one for six.
AS IT HAPPENED
Kulbida got the game started on the right foot for the Cougars, scoring early to spark Regina. However, the Spartans bounced back and, with Fawcett making 11 saves in the opening frame, TWU held the Cougars off the scoreboard the rest of the period.
The second period tilted TWU's way, with Germann scoring on the power play, as she sniped a shot from the top of the circles up and over the shoulder of Kliewer. The Spartans owed an 11-9 advantage in shots in the middle stanza.
Regina came out strong in the third period, outshooting TWU 14-5 over the final 20 minutes and eventually it was Focht scoring the game-winning goal.
