SPARTANS BEAT UBC OKANAGAN 2-0 TO SWEEP WEEKEND

LANGLEY, B.C. – Trinity Western completed their weekend sweep of UBC Okanagan with a 2-0 win on Saturday. With this weekend completed, the Spartans now sport a 2-0-0 record heading into next weekend's road trip.

After Friday's 3-2 rout of UBC Okanagan, the Spartans repeated their scoring habits by doing so in bunches.

The Spartans opened the first half with a series of threatening chances throughout the first 30 minutes of the game. With the rain slowing down the pace of play, the Spartans were able to retain the ball in UBC Okanagan's half of the field for long spurts of play.

Second-year Maddie Melnychuk (Langley, B.C.) wreaked havoc on the opposing defence for the entire first half, creating chances for her teammates regularly throughout the scoreless first half.

It was in the 51st minute when Kathryn Harvey (Coquitlam, B.C.) scored on a beautiful dummy assist played by Anna Dunn (Edmonton).

Soon after the game's first goal was scored, the Spartans came back in the 53rd minute with a goal by Maddie Melnychuk (Langley, B.C.).

The Spartans, led by Elizabeth Hicks (Surrey, B.C.) and Jessica Vance's (Coquitlam, B.C.) strong defending held on to earn Trinity Western's first clean sheet in the 2021 season.

NOTABLE
  • Spartans head coach Graham Roxburgh was absent for tonight's game. In his spot, assistant coach Rob Giesbrecht filled in to lead the team.
  • The Spartans have never lost to UBC Okanagan, improving their head-to-head record to 9-0-1.
  • Fourth-year Bella Roque (Surrey, B.C.) was the unsung hero in tonight's game, playing a significant part in both goals soon after she entered the game as a substitute.
  • Maddie Melnychuk (two goals) and Anna Dunn (two assists) currently sit atop Trinity Western's statistical leaders.

QUOTABLE
TWU Assistant Coach Rob Giesbrecht
"Graham and I weren't concerned with how the girls would do. I think the team could have relaxed a little more off the bat as they seemed tense, so we just needed to be more aggressive and take advantage of our chances in the first half.

"Bella (Roque) brought speed and spunk in at the half. She lit up the right side of the park, combining with the soccer savvy of Anna (Dunn) and Kathryn (Harvey). Graham and I always tell the team to keep their foot on the gas after scoring. We learned from our mistakes yesterday and came through today. Graham and I always tell the team to keep their foot on the gas after scoring. UP NEXT
The Spartans will look to continue in their winning ways as they head to UNBC to play on Sept. 17th and Sept. 18th.
