SPARTANS SHINE IN 6-0 WIN OVER UNBC

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – The no. 3 ranked Spartans came to play on Friday, ending the match with a 6-0 victory over UNBC.

The first 20 minutes of the game were built to get a feel for the rainy conditions, and the match itself. It wasn't until the 21st minute when Anna Dunn (Edmonton) potted her first in Spartans colours, coming off a pinpoint cross from Sierra Haldorson (Winnipeg).

The floodgates opened from there, as the visiting Spartans applied more pressure and put UNBC's young defensive line on their heels. UNBC keeper Brooke Molby made several crucial saves, but first half markers by Madilyn Melynchuk (Langley, B.C.) and Kathryn Harvey (Coquitlam, B.C.) put the Spartans up 3-0 heading into the half.

In the second half, Trinity Western put their foot on the gas. Makenna Dieterich (Langley, B.C.) scored twice in the first ten minutes of the half, while Dunn added her second, doubling the Spartans lead to 6-0 in swift fashion.

NOTABLE
  • Tonight was an important one for the Spartans as fresh faces got to see the scoresheet. Makenna Dieterich's goal and assist stand as her first of the year for each category.
  • Maddie Melnychuk continued her run of scoring, banging in her third of the season on a long-range shot outside the box. The second-year has scored in all three Canada West matches thus far.
  • With Friday's win, the Spartans see their all-time record against UNBC improve to 10-0-0.

QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh

"Really pleased with how we played tonight in many stretches of the game. UNBC defended us tenaciously for the first half hour, so it took us a while to break them down. Sierra Haldorson's assist to create Anna Dunn's goal sent us on our way.

Overall, I'm excited we got lots of minutes for different players. Aliya Coy (Calgary) was excellent down the left side, and the combination of Anna Dunn and Kathryn Harvey was excellent up front. Makenna Dieterich gave us some great minutes off the bench as well."

The Spartans face UNBC (0-3) on Saturday as they search for another weekend sweep.
