VANCOUVER, British Columbia – The UBC Thunderbirds scored three power play goals to defeat the Trinity Western Spartans 3-0 in a midweek game Thursday night at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver, B.C. The win improves UBC to 5-4-1-1 while the loss drops TWU to 1-9-0-1 in Canada West conference play.
UBC got goals from Josh Willams, Cyle McNabb, and Scott Atkinson. TWU's
Berk Berkeliev (Calgary) made 46 saves in the loss, while UBC's Cole Schwebius made 25 saves to earn the shutout victory.
AS IT HAPPENED
The Thunderbirds opened the scoring with a power play goal by Josh Williams at 8:42 of the opening period. UBC would finish the period outshooting TWU 16-8, while going 1-2 with the man advantage. The Spartans finished the period going 0-3 on the power play.
UBC made it a two goal margin with their second power play goal of the night. The Thunderbirds Cyle McNabb scored at 4:08 with his seventh of the season to put UBC up 2-0. The Thunderbirds again finished with the shot advantage outshooting the Spartans 17-10. UBC finished the period 1-3 on the power play, while TWU finished 1-2.
The T-Birds made the final a three goal margin with a late goal at 18:52 of the third period. UBC's Scott Atkinson got his fourth of the season on the power play to make the final 3-0 for the Thunderbirds. UBC finished the period 1-4 with the advantage, while TWU finished 0-4. UBC outshot TWU 16-7 in the final period.

The Spartans are last on the power play at 5-57 (8.8 percent) and eighth on the penalty kill at 70.2 percent (17-57).
