EDMONTON – Trinity Western squared off against Alberta in a Saturday matinee at the Clare Drake Arena, falling 4-1 to the home side.
The Spartans (2-16-0) entered the third period trailing the Pandas (9-5-2) by one, but TWU couldn't stay close as Alberta proceeded to score three unanswered goals in the third period.
First-year
Brooke Legault (St. Francois Xavier, Man.) potted her first Canada West goal in her young career. Legault's goal was assisted by
McKenzie Mayo (Saskatoon), who played her first game back from the injured reserve, and
Kailey Ledoux (Saskatoon), who also earned her first assist in Canada West conference play.
In net,
Jadeyn Kastning (Medicine Hat, Alta.) stopped 27 of 30 shots faced.
AS IT HAPPENED
Kastning turned away 17 of 18 shots faced throughout the first 40 minutes of play, holding the Spartans in the game.
With TWU being outshout by a significant margin, Alberta started to put their foot on the gas, scoring two more unanswered goals to bring the game to a 3-0 Pandas advantage. Legault's marker was scored 13:44 into the third as leading scorer Madison Willan answered soon after with an individual effort to put Saturday's tilt on ice.
NOTABLE
- The Spartans struggled to remain disciplined in Saturday's loss, taking seven penalties for a total of 14 penalty minutes served. Still, TWU's penalty kill was on fire, killing all seven opportunities the Pandas had on the advantage.
