MARTIN HUERTA WINS U SPORTS GOLD IN POLE VAULT

SAINT JOHN, N.B. – Trinity Western University men's pole vaulter Eduardo Martin Huerta (Santiago, Chile) captured gold at the U SPORTS Championships, presented by Saint John LNG, after clearing a personal best 4.93m Saturday at the Irving Oil Field House.

Martin Huerta became the first Spartan pole vaulter to win a U SPORTS gold medal and only the second TWU male to ever win a national individual title, joining Nathan George, who won gold in the 300m in 2016.

With the U SPORTS gold medal, he completes the championship double, after winning the Canada West title two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Grace Konrad (Edmonton) earned her second silver medal in as many days, after finishing second in the 600m with a time of 1:32.23. After entering the national championships ranked ninth in the country, Konrad capped an outstanding weekend with her second trip to the podium.

With their four medals this weekend, including Konrad's 300m silver and Brandon Gremaud's (Kamloops, B.C.) heptathlon bronze, the Spartans are taking home the most medals from a national championship meet since 2016, when they also earned four medals. TWU's largest-ever medal haul was 10 in 2015.

Shortly after winning her 600m silver, Konrad anchored the Spartans 4x200m team to a fourth-place finish in 1:42.17.

The men's 4x400m finished 11th in 3:26.71, while the men's 4x200m team had a DNF in the final, after Danny Earles (Conception Bay, Nfld.) pulled up after suffering an injury on the first leg of the relay.

Following Martin Huerta in pole vault were teammates Joshua Carsience (Abbotsford, B.C.), who finished eighth after clearing 4.28m, while Giovanni Hernandez (Tepic, Mexico) no-heighted.
