SPARTANS DOMINANT IN WIN TO EXTEND WINNING STREAK

ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia – Led third-year midfielder Erin Stewart's (Winnipeg, Man.) two first-half goals the No. 5 Trinity Western Spartans defeated the Fraser Valley Cascades 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Rotary Stadium in Abbotsford, B.C.

The Spartans were dominant in the win as they improved to 8-1-3 and improved their winning streak to six games and their shutout streak to 566 minutes. The loss drops the Cascades to 5-4-3. The victory also secures a playoff spot for the Spartans with two matches remaining in the Canada West season.

TWU fifth-year keeper Hannah Miller (Langley, B.C.) made one save to record the win, while Fraser Valley's keepers Kareena Sahota, had four saves, and Addison Chen, had three saves, in the loss.

AS IT HAPPENED
Stewart opened the scoring in the 17th minute with her first of the match. Third-year forward Charity Field (Burnaby, B.C.) set up the play when she moved up the left side of the part. Field sent the ball across the penalty area to the far side of the six-yard box to Stewart. The open Stewart one touched the ball into the open side of the Cascades net to put TWU up 1-0.

The Spartans' control of the ball resulted in Stewart's second of the match in the 39th minute. Stewart took a drop pass from fourth-year midfielder Bryana Buttar (Abbotsford, B.C.) on the top right side of the penalty area. Stewart made a nice dribble move to get open and then chipped the ball to the far top corner to put TWU up 2-0.

Six minutes into the second half the Spartans Buttar got TWU's third of the afternoon. Buttar took a long shot from distance outside the top of the box that newly substituted UFV keeper Chen could not handle as the ball got over the line to put TWU up 3-0 in the 52nd minute.

The Spartans had a number of near misses over the remainder of the half while containing the Cascades offence, as they secured the 3-0 win.

QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh
"Super pleased. It's never an easy place to play and I thought we moved the ball really well early in the game. In the second half, we were able to get lots of minutes for everyone and we were still able to generate lots more chances. Unlucky not to score more, but satisfied with a good corporate win."
