SPARTANS EARN WEEKEND SPLIT WITH BISONS

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Led by third-year centre Brooklyn Anderson's (Shellbrook, Sask.)  three-point night and third-year goalie Kate Fawcett's (Tottenham, Ont.) shutout the Trinity Western Spartans defeated the visiting Manitoba Bisons 3-0 Saturday afternoon at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C. The win moves the Spartans to 5-4-0-1 for 11 points, while the loss drops the Bisons to 3-6-0-1 for seven points.

Fawcett made 26 saves to record the shutout win. While Meagan Relf made 12 saves in the Bisons' loss.
Anderson finished the night with two goals and an assist on third-year centre Jordyn Matthews' (Okotoks, Alta.) goal.

AS IT HAPPENED
Manitoba outshot TWU 9-3 in the opening period but neither team was able to find the back of the net.

The Spartans opened the scoring in the second period with Anderson getting her fifth of the season converting on a breakaway at 5:28.

Matthews made it a two-goal lead for the Spartans at 11:41 with her second of the season when she converted a rebound off of a shot from Anderson.

Anderson got the final goal of the game and her sixth of the season with a power play marker at 15:36 of the second period to put TWU up 3-0. Anderson, who was alone at the side of the crease, was able to convert a pass by second-year forward Olivia Leier (Regina, Sask.) from the far side boards. Manitoba again had the shot advantage 8-6 over TWU.

The final period had opportunities for both teams, but again neither was able to find the back of the net. With the Bisons holding a 9-3 edge in shots.

QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Peter Hay
"A much better effort this afternoon. Everyone came ready to buy into the team structure and little habits. Although we were outshot, we played a good game giving them very little quality chances. I was proud of how we bounced back from yesterday's tough lesson. Now we know we need to be ready every game regardless of who we play. Manitoba is a tough team to play and made us earn it.

Spartan standouts:
"Brooklyn had an outstanding weekend along with Kate who deserved the shutout. Our D played a much better game and made great decisions on the breakout. Forwards did what they did to find a way to score with limited shots. We are happy with the result."
