SPARTANS FALL TO THUNDERBIRDS ON THE ROAD

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – The Trinity Western Spartans dropped a tough road match 3-0 to the No. 1 ranked UBC Thunderbirds Friday night at Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre in Vancouver, B.C. The loss drops the Spartans to 11-12-4, while the win improves the Thunderbirds to 21-2-2.
 
TWU's Kate Fawcett (Tottenham, Ont.) made 47 saves in the loss, while UBC's Elise Hugens made 16 saves to earn the shutout victory.
 
After a scoreless first period in which UBC had a 14-10 edge in shots on goal, the Thunderbirds broke open the game in the second period. UBC outshot TWU 18-4 over the 20 minutes and outscore the Spartans 2-0.  Grace Elliott got her eighth and ninth of the season at 9:22 and 19:18 to give the home team a 2-0 lead heading into the final period.  
 
The Thunderbirds closed out the game in the third period outshooting TWU 18-2, with MacKenzie Kordic scoring the lone goal at 6:34 of the final frame.

NOTABLE
• The Spartans are now 1-10 lifetime against the Thunderbirds and 1-8 in conference play.
• UBC had a 50-16 edge in shots on goal over TWU
• The Spartans finished the night 0-3 on the power play, while the Thunderbirds finished 0-4.
• TWU currently sits in the sixth and final play-off place in the Canada West standings with 26 points. The Manitoba Bisons are in the seventh spot with 23 points. But the Bisons have two extra games in hand on the Spartans.
