SPARTANS EARN WIN OVER LETHBRIDGE

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – Trinity Western will return home with a 2-0 win from their outing in Lethbridge, after Erin Stewart (Winnipeg) and Sierra Halldorson (Winnipeg) each scored to lift the No. 6-ranked Spartans to their third victory of the season Sunday at the University of Lethbridge Community Sports Stadium.

Stewart scored in first half stoppage time, while Halldorson added the insurance marker on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute.

TWU goalkeeper Hannah Miller (Langley, B.C.) made three saves for her second clean sheet of the 2023 campaign.

Lethbridge goalkeeper Bridie Harding made a whopping 16 saves, as the Spartans outshot the home side 18-3.

The Spartans are 3-1-3 on the season, while Lethbridge drops to 1-6.

QUOTABLE
Graham Roxburgh – Head Coach
"I'm super pleased that we got the win. It's a tricky place to play because of the wind and our opponents made it very challenging by breaking up play. It felt like our players had to overcome more than just the opposition today, but I'm happy that we stuck to the task. I thought Erin Stewart was intelligent with her passing and was rewarded with a nice goal. We had a few 'Grade A' chances early on that, if we put those away, than that game is very different. It was very evident that they were setting up to defend and hoping to catch us on a counter. It was nice to see that we were able to kill the game off with a goal in the second half. We just weren't all that clinical today, which is something we need to improve upon."

AS IT HAPPENED
The visiting TWU Spartans controlled much of the play throughout the first 20 minutes, but couldn't beat Horns' goalkeeper Harding early on.

A chance for the Spartans to take the lead came in at the 43rd minute of play, as Sophie Crowther (New Westminster, B.C.) worked around the Pronghorns defenders for a shot on net, but the fifth-year Lethbridge goalkeeper made the save.

In first half stoppage time, the Spartans made it 1-0, as Stewart connected, taking a pass from Mya Bajpai (Mission, B.C.) and putting a well-placed shot past Harding.

The Spartans continued to dictate the pace of play throughout the second half, as the Spartans defence kept the 'Horns from finding any offence.

TWU scored to make it 2-0 in the 72nd minute of play, as Halldorson capitalized on a penalty kick beating Harding to the low right corner.
