LANGLEY, British Columbia – Led by first-year midfielder
Laren Spiller's (Surrey, B.C.) three-point night, the Trinity Western Spartans defeated the Regina Cougars 4-0 Friday night at Chase Office Field in Langley, B.C. The dominant victory improves the No. 6 Spartans to 4-1-3, while the loss drops the Cougars to 1-2-4.
Fifth-year keeper
Hannah Miller (Langley, B.C.) made two saves for the Spartans to win, while the Cougars' Cassidy Fedoruk made seven saves in the loss.
TWU's Spiller finished the night with two goals and one assist. Scoring the other goals for the Spartans were fourth-year midfielder
Sierra Halldorson (Winnipeg, Man.) and third-year midfielder
Erin Stewart (Winnipeg, Man.).
AS IT HAPPENED
The Spartans opened the scoring in the fifth minute. TWU's Spiller moved up the left side of the pitch and sent a low pass across the top of the six-yard box. A sliding Halldorson met the ball and tucked it into the right corner of the Cougars net past Fedoruk for her third of the season.
Spiller made it a two-goal lead for the Spartans in the 38
th minute with her first goal as a Spartan. Second-year defender
Mya Bajpai (Mission, B.C.) started the play with a strong run up the right side. After beating the outside back, Bajpai sent a beautiful cross to the top of the six where a charging Spiller made a perfect header into the top of the Cougars' net to put TWU up 2-0.
The rookie midfielder kept her point spree going five minutes later. Spiller took a pass from first-year forward
Mansha Sidhu (Surrey, B.C.) outside the top of the box, made a move to beat her defender, and sent a perfect shot over the Cougars Fedoruk and into the top of the Regina net to put the Spartans up 3-0 in the 43
rd minute.
The Spartans continued their pressure to start the second half. TWU
Erin Stewart intercepted a pass at the top of the Regina box and sent a ball into the top of the Cougars net to give TWU a 4-0 lead in the 50
th minute.
QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh
"Really pleased with the overall corporate effort. We moved the ball well and created really good chances. Sierra was a tower of strength tonight and Sophie (Crowther, second-year, forward, New Westminster, B.C.) and Laren were lively. Dani (Cooper, second-year defender, Surrey, B.C.) and Tilly (James, third-year, defender, Vancouver, B.C.) anchored us so well and it is good to start seeing us play on the front foot."
"I'm really excited to see what this group can become because everyone contributed with really good performances."
