LANGLEY, British Columbia – For the fourth time in the last four matches the Trinity Western Spartans are settling for a 1-1 tie, as the Spartans tied the Saskatchewan Huskies 1-1 Friday night at Chase Office Field in Langley, B.C. TWU remains unbeaten at 3-0-5, while the Huskies move to 1-3-3.
Third-year keeper
Yeshua Silwamba (Maple Ridge, B.C.) made two saves in the tie, while Saskatchewan's Jaron Slopinski made five saves.
Rookie midfielder
Marcel Bona (Vancouver, B.C.) scored the lone goal for the Spartans in the 50
th minute, while Robert Woodroffe-Brown scored the Huskies' lone goal in the 84
th minute.
AS IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first half, which saw the Spartans miss on a couple of quality chances, TWU finally broke the deadlock in the 50
th minute. The Spartans Bona got his first of the season after finishing high in the Huskies net. Bona took the shot from the top of the penalty area after third-year forward
Xander Roxburgh (Langley, B.C.) was able to get a pass through the challenging defender to an open Bona.
TWU would control much of the second half until Saskatchewan made the most of a Spartan defensive miscue. The Huskies Robert Woodroffe-Brown made the most of the loose ball in the TWU box and tied the match up at 1-1 in the 84
th minute.
QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Mike Shearon
"I think that we started a little bit slow in the game. I thought Sask was good in the first little bit. But as the game started to settle I thought that we were able to play the way that we wanted to. Coming out in the second half I thought that we began to dominate the game a little bit more and we got our goal on the counter. And a good job by Xander to keep it going and a fantastic finish by Marcel to get his first of the year."
"I thought we were in control and then obviously we had a moment and he isn't going to slip every time, but that is soccer, and that happens sometimes. But in the end, it's not that moment. The moments were the two goals that we should have had in the first half. The moments were the three goals that we should have had in the second half. You take those and it is a totally different game. We need to get to the point where we are scoring more and demand more from the guys up front."
