SPARTANS REMAIN UNBEATEN AFTER SHUT-OUT WIN OVER TIMBERWOLVES

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western third-year keeper Yeshua Silwamba (Maple Ridge, B.C.) made six saves to earn the shut-out and lead the Spartans to a 3-0 victory over UNBC Timberwolves Saturday night at Chase Office Field in Langley, B.C. With the win the Spartans stay unbeaten at 3-0-1, while the Timberwolves remain searching for their first win of the season at 0-3-1.
UNBC fifth-year keeper Daniel Zadravec made three saves in the loss for the Timberwolves.

Trinity Western got goals from third-year forward Christian Rossi (Surrey, B.C.) in the 35th, third-year midfielder Thomas Powell (Coquitlam, B.C.) in the 45th, and third-year forward Charles Nana (Calgary, AB) in the 90th minute.

AS IT HAPPENED
Christian Rossi opened the scoring in the 35th minute. Rossi took a corner kick from Powell in the centre of the box and found the back of the net to put TWU up 1-0.

The Spartan duo switched places in the second half. Rossi sent a pass from midfield across the park to the far side of the penalty area where Powell sent the ball over the UNBC keeper and found the top of the Timberwolves' net to put TWU up 2-0 just before the half-time whistle.

Trinity Western got their final goal of the evening in the 90th minute after the Spartans' Nana was taken down in the penalty area after a strong rush up the right side towards the UNBC net. Nana then stepped up to take the PK and make the final 3-0 for the Spartans.

QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Mike Shearon
"I think the game overall was a little bit more spirited between both teams, and both groups were into it. It took us a little bit of time with our new group to kind of figure out how to play and what spaces to use in the first half."

"We were a bit fortunate on the corner kick goal, but we will take it because last night we struggled to score. And soccer is sometimes a pretty funny game and I don't really know if it was a 3-0 game for us but we will take the points and move on and continue to grow."

NOTABLE

  • The Timberwolves received three yellow cards, while the Spartans received two yellow cards.

  • TWU's last loss to UNBC was October 5, 2014, when the Timberwolves defeated the Spartans 1-0 in Prince George, B.C.
