LANGLEY, British Columbia –Trinity Western third-year forward
Jarrett Penner (Saskatoon, Sask.) scored twice for the Spartans, but it was not enough as TWU dropped a tough 6-3 match-up with the No. 3 UBC Thunderbirds Thursday night at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C. The win improves UBC to 19-4-0, while the loss drops Trinity Western to 2-16-1.
TWU second-year goalie
Raphael Audet (Rimouski, Que.) made 37 saves in the loss, while UBC's Dorrin Luding made 20 saves to record the win.
TWU's other marker came from third-year defenseman
Landon Fuller (Williams Lake, B.C.). UBC had single goals from Chris Douglas, Jake Lee, Sam Huo, Ty Thorpe, Cyle McNabb, and Logan Doust.
AS IT HAPPENED
Audet had another strong game for the Spartans, with both teams scoreless after 20 minutes of play. The Thunderbirds finished the opening period with a 12-7 advantage in shots on goal.
UBC came alive in the second period with three goals in just over five minutes.
Chris Douglas opened the scoring at 3:51. Jack Wismer started the goal from behind the TWU net with a pass to an open Douglas in front of the Spartans net. Douglas one-timed his shot to the top right corner to beat Audet and put the Thunderbirds up 1-0.
Jake Lee made it 2-0 at 7:29. On a five-on-three power play, Lee took a D-to-D pass from Liam Kindree and beat Audet high above the blocker.
Sam Huo gave the Thunderbirds a 3-0 lead at 9:19. Huo and Lee had a give-and-go on a three-on-one break for UBC. Huo went up the wing and found Lee in the centre of the TWU zone. Huo got the return pass just to the left of Audet to make the score 3-0 for the Thunderbirds.
The Spartans got on the board at 13:28 on a goal from Fuller. Fuller beat Liding when he took a wraparound pass from behind the UBC net by fourth-year forward
Joshua Bruce (Surrey, B.C.). Fuller took the pass from just inside the blue line and beat a screened Liding to make it 3-1 for the T-Birds.
UBC dominated the period outshooting TWU 23-9.
UBC's Ty Thorpe reclaimed the three-goal lead for the Thunderbirds at 2:19 of the third period. Tian Rask took advantage of a turnover by the Spartans just inside the Thunderbirds blue line. Rask and Thorpe broke out in a two-on-one. Rask went up the left side and found an open Thorpe on the right side who put the puck in the open net to make it 4-1 for UBC.
The Thunderbirds made it 5-1 on a breakaway goal at 10:27. Jonny Lambos found Cyle McNabb at the TWU blue line. McNabb went in untouched from his end to beat Audet and put the Thunderbirds up 5-1.
TWU got back on the score sheet at 12:21. Penner went up right side from the red line and then, in traffic, beat Luding to the short glove side to cut the UBC lead to 5-2 with 7:39 remaining.
UBC's Logan Doust finished off the scoring for the Thunderbirds at 16:46. Doust got in alone behind the TWU defense and was able to slip the puck under Audet's pads to make it 6-1 for UBC.
Penner got the final goal of the night, and his second of the game, at 18:05. On a nicely placed shot Penner skated in from the left side and beat UBC's Luding high on the blocker side to make it 6-3 for the Thunderbirds.
UBC outshot TWU 8-7 in the final period.
QUOTABLE
TWU Head Coach Ben Walter
"Unfortunately we didn't play the way we needed to for us to have a chance tonight. UBC played well and capitalized on their chances but I think that we have a lot more than we showed tonight."
"Raph Audet was great in net, he kept us in the game into the third period like he always does. We gave up way too many quality chances and he was forced to make a lot of tough saves. I'm happy for
Jarrett Penner to get rewarded with two goals, he is a guy who has worked hard for us all year."
"We will look to regroup tomorrow and bring more energy and confidence than we did tonight".
