LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western Spartans dropped their second of the weekend, 5-1, to the No. 5 Alberta Pandas Saturday afternoon at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C. The loss drops the Spartans to 6-11-0-1 for 13 points in Canada West, while the win moves Alberta is 16-2-1-1 for 34 points.
Third-year goalie
Mabel Maltais (Edmonton, Alta.) made 27 saves in the Spartans' loss, while Halle Oswald made 20 saves in the Panda win.
Third-year blue-liner Mckenzie Mayo (Saskatoon, Sask.) with her first of the season was the lone goal scorer for the Spartans, while Payton Laumbach with two goals, fourth and fifth, Natalie Kieser, eighth, Cassidy Maplethorpe, fifth, and Madison Willan, fifth, tallied for the Pandas.
AS IT HAPPENED
Despite having 8-7 edge in shots in the opening frame, the Pandas Kieser got the lone goal of the opening period at 8:45 to put Alberta up 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.
Alberta's Maplethorpe at 4:52 and Willan at 6:53 gave the Pandas a 3-0 lead before TWU's Mayo got the Spartans on the board at the 10-minute mark. Alberta outshot TWU 9-7 in the period to go into the final period with a 3-1 lead.
The Pandas dominated the third period, outshooting the Spartans 16-6. Laumbach broke the game open with her first goal at 1:48 and then an insurance marker at 19:42 to make the final 5-1 for Alberta.
