SPARTANS OPEN CANADA WEST SEASON WITH WIN OVER MACEWAN

EDMONTON – Trinity Western's Maryn Boldon (Okotoks, Alta.) and Faye Murray (Rosenort, Man.) had 12 kills apiece to help lead the Spartans to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-14) win over MacEwan to open the Canada West season Friday at Christenson Family Centre.

The Spartans were dominant from start to finish, controlling the match throughout while hitting .293 as a team. Setter Sydney Gill (St. Catharines, Ont.) had 28 assists to guide the offence while also earning a match-high four aces. Kaylee Plouffe (Edmonton) and Grace McGillivray (Langley, B.C.) added three blocks each.

Danielle Jodoin and Alyshia Bryks had eight kills each for the Griffins.

TWU has now won their season-opening match in each of their last 10 Canada West seasons.

The Spartans, who have won eight straight against the Griffins, are now 16-2 all-time against MacEwan, with their only two losses coming in 2018-19 on back-to-back nights in Edmonton.

QUOTABLE
Brynden McTavish, TWU Assistant Coach
"Tonight was an encouraging way to start our regular season. As a group I was really pleased with our sustained service pressure all evening, with lots of players going on runs. Sydney Gill did a great job running our offense, getting our attackers advantages. Faye Murray helped lead the way for us offensively, and it was great to see her come out with this performance after the work she has put in after transferring last season. We're looking forward to another good test tomorrow night."

NEXT UP
The Spartans and Griffins will play the rematch Saturday at 3 p.m. (MT).
