SPARTANS SCORE, BUT FALL TO NO. 3-RANKED UBC

VANCOUVER – Trinity Western's Jordyn Matthews scored the Spartans first goal of the season, but TWU lost 4-1 to No. 3-ranked UBC Saturday afternoon at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.

Matthews scored on the powerplay at 7:13 of the third period to bring the Spartans within two goals, but a Thunderbirds marker with just under five minutes to play sealed the win for UBC.

Kasey Ditner (Fort St. John, B.C.) and Kara Yackel (St. Paul, Man.) picked up assists for the Spartans, who dropped to 0-4 on the season. The win sees UBC improve to 4-2.

Grace Elliott, Mackenzie Kordic, Vanessa Schaefer and Makenzie McCallum all scored for UBC.

Spartans goalie Kate Fawcett (Tottenham, Ont.) made 33 saves, while UBC netminder Mya Lucifora stopped 19 of the 20 shots she faced.

TWU finished one for seven on the power play, while UBC was one for five.

Elliott opened the scoring in the first period before Kordic and Schaefer added to the T-Birds lead in the second. After Matthews' third-period marker closed the gap to two, McCallum rounded out the scoring for the home side.

QUOTABLE
Peter Hay, TWU Head Coach
"UBC came out with high energy in the first and if it wasn't for Fawcett, it could have been much worse. But we were able to fight our way back and had a much better second, even though we went down 3-0. We went all in the during the third and found a way to score our first goal of the year on a power play, but UBC got their fourth goal to go back ahead by three, even though we had countless chances to make it 3-2. We are young and we have lots to learn but I consider this weekend a success in our process and it sets us up for a big weekend against Calgary next week."

NEXT UP
The Spartans are back at home Oct. 25th (7 p.m.) and Oct. 26th (1 p.m.) when they host Calgary at the Langley Events Centre.
