SPARTANS DROP SEASON-OPENER AGAINST MOUNT ROYAL

Box Score LANGLEY, B.C. – Trinity Western's men's hockey team lost 6-3 against visiting Mount Royal in the Spartans home-opener Friday at the George Preston Arena.

Skyler Cameron (Nanaimo, B.C.), Christian Lowe (Port Moody, B.C.) and Jonathan Krahn (Chilliwack, B.C.) scored for the Spartans, while TWU's Leon Sommer (Linz, Austria) made 28 saves. Riley Sims countered for MRU, stopping 16 of the 19 shots he faced.

Spartans captain Jesse Pomeroy (Prince George, B.C.) and Luke Spadafora (Calgary) picked up two assists apiece.

MRU's Robbie Fromm-Delorme had a four-point outing, with two goals and two assists, while Jason Martens, Tristan Zandee, Clay Hanus and Zafir Rawji added singles. Justin Lies had three assists. Last year's Canada West leading scorer Connor Bouchard was held off the scoresheet.

After Cameron opened the scoring on the power play, MRU responded with four straight goals, including two while a man up to take control of the contest. Lowe made it a two-goal game with 7:45 to play in the middle frame, but a third power-play marker from MRU with 3:15 to go in the period restored the Cougars lead. Krahn scored early in the third period but Fromm-Delorme's empty-netter rounded out the scoring.

QUOTABLE
Ben Walter, TWU Head Coach
"I was proud of our team. Being short numbers and some guys playing roles they're not used to, I was really proud of our effort. We played the way we wanted to for most of the game. There were a couple mistakes and a couple moments where wished we had made a different play, but for those mistakes are fixable. It's not something I'm worried about. I told the guys after the game that it's something to build on. It should feel good that we put that game together against a good time like Mount Royal.

"I think in the second half of the game, we forechecked a bit more and we forced them to defend us a bit more. For us, we need to have more of that at the beginning of the game tomorrow. I know the effort is going to be there because this is such a strong group of guys."

NEXT UP
TWU and MRU will play the rematch Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre.
