SPARTANS FALL TO UBC OKANAGAN HEAT IN LOW-SCORING MATCH-UP

KELOWNA, British Columbia – The Trinity Western Spartans had a tough night shooting as the Spartans fell to the UBC Okanagan Heat 63-53 Friday night at the UBC Okanagan Gym in Kelowna, B.C. The loss drops the Spartans to 1-4 in conference play, while the loss drops the Heat to 3-2.
 
The Spartans looked good early and led the Heat 17-10 after the opening 10 minutes. TWU would expand their lead to 11 points, 37-26, heading into the half-time break. But the second half belonged to the Heat. UBC Okanagan dominated the third quarter, 22-8, to take a 48-45 lead heading into the final 10 minutes. The Spartans trailed by one point, 50-49, with 7:30 remaining. But they were unable to close, as the Heat finished the game with a 13-4 run to make the final a 10-point UBC Okanagan win.
 
Third-year guard Marcus Shankar (Campbell River, B.C.) with 10 points, and four rebounds, fifth-year guard Josh Belvin with 10 points, three steals, and two assists, and guard Jerric Palma with nine points, and six assists led the Spartans. Jalen Shirley with 17 points, and five assists, Isaak Moore with 14 points, and Jas Dhudwal with 11 rebounds, four points, and three blocks led the Heat.

The Spartans and Heat will finish the two-game series tomorrow at 6 p.m. (PT) at the UBC Okanagan gym. The game can be seen live on Canada West TV.
 
NOTABLE 
  • The Spartans finished the game shooting 30.3 percent (20-66) from the field, 25 percent (7-28) from the three-point line, and 85.7 percent (6-7) from the free throw line. While the Heat shot 39.3 percent (24-61) from the field, 48.1 percent (13-27) from the three-point line, and 50 percent (2-4) from the free-throw line.
  • UBCO outrebounded TWU 47-37.
  • TWU had 10 turnovers to UBC'Os 16. The Spartans had eight steals to the Heat's one steal.
  • Last weekend the Spartans split with the Mount Royal Cougars, winning 84-74 in overtime, and losing 64-45 in Calgary, Alta.
  • Last week the Heat were swept by the Fraser Valley Cascades, 76-63, and 84-75 in overtime, on the road in Abbotsford, B.C.
  • TWU is currently 14-6 lifetime against UBC Okanagan. Last season the Spartans swept the Heat, winning 94-91, and 74-61 in Langley, B.C.
  • The last time TWU lost to UBC Okanagan was 97-88 on October 27, 2019, in Kelowna, B.C.
