VANCOUVER, British Columbia – The Trinity Western Spartans had a strong start, but it wasn't enough as the UBC Thunderbirds pulled away to defeat the Spartans 99-78 Saturday night at War Memorial gym in Vancouver, B.C. The loss drops the Spartans to 0-2, while the win moves the Thunderbirds to 2-0 in Canada West conference play.
TWU came out flying and quickly jumped out to an 8-0 lead, but UBC gradually took control of the opening quarter and pushed to take a 13 point, 32-19 lead at the end of the opening quarter. The Spartans matched the Thunderbirds in the second quarter to trail 55-42 at the half. TWU came out with a solid start to the second half and cut the UBC lead to seven-points, 72-65, heading into the final quarter. It was as close as the Spartans would get as the Thunderbirds outscored TWU 27-13 in the final frame.
Fifth-year guard
Jerric Palma (Richmond, B.C.) with 23 points, three rebounds, and three assists, and fourth-year guard
David Mutabazi (Delta, B.C.) with 15 points, nine rebounds, and four assists led the Spartans. While Gus Goerzen with 20 points, and Nikola Guzina with 18 points, and three rebounds led the Thunderbirds.

The Spartans will head to Calgary for a pair of games against the Mount Royal Cougars on November 8-9. Game time at Kenyon Court is set for 8 p.m. (MT), and 7 p.m. (MT) respectively. Both games can be seen live on Canada West TV.
