KAMLOOPS, British Columbia – The Trinity Western Spartans opened the 2024 Canada West season with a 2-1 loss to the Thompson Rivers WolfPack Friday evening at Hillside Stadium in Kamloops, B.C. TWU third-year midfielder
Jordan Low (Port Moody, B.C.) had the lone goal for the Spartans, while Lachlan Will scored twice for the WolfPack.
TWU third-year keeper
Alexander Cordeiro (Burnaby, B.C.) made four saves in the loss, while TRU's Luca Ortu made one save to earn the win.
AS IT HAPPENED
Low opened the Spartans Canada West scoring with a marker in the 24th minute. Low took a chip from fourth-year midfielder Thomas Powel (Coquitlam, B.C.) just over centre. With a strong individual effort Low weaved his way through the WolfPack midfield and from the top right side of the box found the lower left corner of the TRU net to put TWU up 1-0
Thompson Rivers' Lachlan Will got the WolfPack on the board in the 66th minute. Abdel Coulibaly got behind the Spartan back line and sent a square ball, from the left side, to the centre of the TWU penalty area to an open Will, who found the back of the Spartans net to tie the match up at 1-1.
The WolfPack took the lead in the 78th minute with Will's second of the match. Coulibaly was again the threat up the left side, where he found Will in traffic at the top of the TWU box. Will one timed a hard shot into the lower left corner to put TRU up 2-1.
TWU would have a few opportunities in the final minutes but were unable to find the equalizer.
The Spartans were the better of the two teams in the opening 45 minutes. But the WolfPack had control of the game for much of the final half.
QUOTABLE
Trinity Western Head Coach Michael Shearon
"Definitely a disappointing night. I thought we played well in the first half and could have been up by more. The second half we lost some control of the game and ended up getting scored on. In life you are given opportunities, and we have an opportunity now to struggle and emerge."
