SPARTANS STRUGGLE AGAINST THUNDERBIRDS

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – In a rematch of the U SPORTS and Canada West championship games the No. 4 Trinity Western Spartans were no match for the No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds Friday night as the T-Birds defeated the Spartans 4-0 at Ken Woods field in Vancouver, B.C. The loss is the first of the season for the Spartans and drops TWU to 2-1-2, while the win keeps the Thunderbirds unbeaten at 5-0.
 
The Spartans were held off the scoresheet, while the Thunderbirds got goals from Jayda Thompson, Sienna Gibson, Ava Alexander, and Holly Whelan.
 
TWU second-year keeper Yasmine Pahal (Surrey, B.C.) made seven saves in the Spartans' loss. While UBC's Dakota Beckett made two  saves in the Thunderbird win.
 
UP NEXT
The Spartans will have a day off before matching up with the UNBC Timberwolves Sunday afternoon at Masich Place Stadium in Prince George, B.C.
 
AS IT HAPPENED
After much of evenly played opening half the UBC Thunderbirds Jayda Thompson got the opening goal in extra time to put the Thunderbirds up 1-0 after 45 minutes.
 
UBC outshot the TWU 7-4 in total shots and 4-2 in shots on goal. The Spartans had the lone corner of the match.
 
The Thunderbirds came out strong and in the 48th minute made it a two-goal game with UBC's Sienna Gibson putting the Thunderbirds up 2-0.
 
UBC blew the game open in the middle of the half with goals in the 63rd and 67th minute. The Thunderbirds Ava Alexander made it 3-0 in the 63rd minute, with Holly Whelan making it 4-0 in the 67th minute.
 
NOTABLE
  • The Spartans were outshot 20-5 in total shots and 11-2 in shots on goal.
  • The Thunderbirds also had the edge in corner kicks at 4-2.
  • The Spartans and the Thunderbirds last met in the 2023 U SPORTS championship, which UBC prevailed 1-0 in overtime against the Spartans. Prior to that meeting TWU defeated UBC 1-0 in PK in the Canada West championship.
  • TWU is currently 19-29-12 against UBC.
  • Last season in conference play UBC defeated TWU 1-0 in the lone conference match-up.
