SPARTANS LOSE IN FOUR TO CALGARY DINOS

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western Spartans were unable to get the weekend sweep as they fell 3-1 Saturday afternoon at the Jack Simpson Gym in Calgary, Alta. The 25-21, 16-25, 25-23, 25-21 loss drops the Spartans to 6-10, while the win drops the Dinos to 4-12.
 
Third-year outside Maryn Boldon (Okotoks, Alta.) with 17 kills, eight digs, and four service aces, and fourth-year middle Kaylee Plouffe (Sherwood Park, Alta.) with 11 kills, six blocks, and four digs led the Spartans. While Sophia Hansen with 16 kills, and eight digs, Miranda Baines with 12 kills, 15 digs, two blocks, and two digs, and Daisy Olsen with 12 kills six digs, and five blocks led the Dinos.
 
Third-year setter Sydney Gill (St. Catharines, Ont.) and first-year setter Tayana Dmitruk (Surrey, B.C.) each finished with 20 set assists for the Spartans. While Anya Fehr with 22 assists, and Amelia Anderson with 13 assists led the Dinos.
 
UP NEXT
The Spartans will now return to BC for a home-and-home series with the Fraser Valley Cascades, on Thursday, February 6 at 5 p.m. (PT) at the Langley Events Centre, and Friday, February 7 at 7:45 p.m. (PT) at the UFV Athletic Centre. Both games are streamed live on Canada West TV.

AS IT HAPPENED
The opening set had the two teams vying for control early and being tied at 14-14 after a service ace from Boldon. However, The Dinos finished the set strong with an 11-7 run to take the opening set 25-21 and lead 1-0.

In the second set, the Spartans took control early against Calgary, capitalizing on a series of Calgary's errors to build a lead. At 7-3, Boldon recorded a service ace that prompted a Calgary timeout, but the momentum remained with the Spartans. Calgary struggled with attack errors, allowing Trinity Western to extend their advantage to 12-4 after an attack error by Miranda Baines. Despite a brief push from Calgary, highlighted by a kill from Daisy Olsen at 15-10, Trinity Western maintained their edge, closing the set with a 25-16 victory after Isabelle Musholt-Ko's decisive kill to tie the match at 1-1.

The third set started with Calgary gaining an early advantage to lead 9-2, prompting a timeout from Trinity Western. The Spartans gained momentum and after a kill by Maryn Boldon, TWU had closed the gap to 16-11, leading to a Calgary timeout. Despite a strong comeback attempt by Trinity Western, featuring multiple kills from Boldon and a service ace by Kaylee Plouffe, Calgary secured the set at 25-23 with a final kill by Sophia Hansen.

The fourth set saw Trinity Western start strong with a service ace from Maryn Boldon at 4-1 and continued to lead with an 8-6 advantage following a service ace by Tayana Dmitruk. Calgary managed to level the score at 16-16 with a series of solid plays, including a block by Daisy Olsen and Sam Silva. Calgary pulled ahead down the stretch with a 9-5 run to take the set with a final service ace by Miranda Baines, 25-21, to win the match 3-1.

  • TWU finished the night hitting .184 (53-27-141), while Calgary hit at .199 (49-21-141).
  • The Spartans finished with eight blocks, while the Dinos finished with 15-5.
  • Calgary had a 9-8 edge in service aces.
