BEARS TOP SPARTANS

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The No. 4 Alberta Golden Bears had a dominating game as they defeated the Spartans 5-0 Friday night at the Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton, Alta. The loss drops the Spartans to 3-19-2-1, while the win moves the Golden Bears to 19-6.
 
Scoring for the Golden Bears was Josh Prokop with the hat trick, for his 11th of the season, Jakin Smallwood with his third of the season, and Tyler Preziuso with his ninth of the season.
 
Third-year goalie Raphael Audet (Rimouski, Que.) made 46 saves Spartans in the loss. Tyler Palmer with 18 saves earned the shutout win for the Golden Bears.
 
UP NEXT
The Spartans will finish the two-game series on Saturday, February 1 at the Clare Drake Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. (MT) on both nights and can be seen live on Canada West TV.
 
AS IT HAPPENED
The Golden Bears outshot the Spartans 18-9 on their way to a 2-0 first-period lead with Smallwood scoring at 3:45, and Prokop getting his first at 13:33.
 
Alberta continued to control the play outshooting TWU 21-8 in the second, with Prokop getting his second of the night at 12:12 to make it 3-0 for the Golden Bears after 40 minutes.
 
The Golden Bears finished the game the way they started outshooting the Spartans 12-1 with two goals, Preziuso at 12:42, and Prokop at 19:00, to make the final 5-0 for Alberta.

  • The Golden Bears outshot the Spartans 51-18.
  • TWU was 0-3 on the power play, while Alberta was 1-4.
