JUICE BELVIN SETS NEW TWU SCORING RECORD IN WIN OVER UNBC TIMBERWOLVES

LANGLEY, British Columbia– Trinity Western fifth-year guard Josh Belvin (Long Beach, Calf.) broke the Spartans' single-game scoring record with a 43-point performance to lead the Spartans to a 93-63 win over the UNBC Timberwolves Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, B.C. The win gives the Spartans a weekend sweep and improves TWU to 10-8, while the loss drops the Timberwolves to 1-17.
 
TWU led 48-34 at the half and blew the game open by outscoring UNBC 23-8 in the third quarter to lead 71-42 going into the final 10 minutes.
 
Belvin breaks the previous record of 42 points, held by Canada West and Spartan Hall of Famer Jacob Doerksen. Doerksen ('11) set the record in a 114-89 win against the UFV Cascades on December 4, 2010.

Belvin also broke the TWU record for steals in a game with eight steals on Saturday night. Breaking the record of seven, which was held by six Spartans including Belvin, who had seven in an 83-68 win on Jan. 31 against UBC.
 
Fellow graduating fifth-year guard Jerric Palma (Richmond, B.C.) also hit double digits in scoring finishing with 19 points, seven rebounds, and five assists for the Spartans. In addition to his record-breaking scoring effort, Belvin was two steals away from recording a triple-double finishing with 43 points, 11 rebounds, and eight steals.
 
Evgeny Baukin with 13 points, and five rebounds, and Wesley Ainu'u with eight points, five rebounds, and four blocked shots led the Timberwolves.
 
UP NEXT
The Spartans will finish the Canada West conference play next weekend in Abbotsford, B.C. against the Fraser Valley Cascades on Friday, February 14, and Saturday, February 15. Game times are set for 8 p.m. and 5 p.m. and can be seen live on Canada West TV.

  • The Spartans finished the night shooting 40.2 percent (33-82) from the field, 35.7 percent (15-42) from the three-point line, and percent 80 percent (12-15) from the foul line. The Timberwolves shot 38.7 percent (24-62), 21.1 percent (4-19), and 73.3 percent (11-15) respectively.
  • The Spartans had a 50-40 edge in rebounding.
  • TWU finished with 14 steals to UNBC's 22. The Spartans had nine turnovers to the Timberwolves had 22.
  • Last night the Spartans defeated the Timberwolves 76-66 at the Langley Events Centre, in Langley, B.C.
  • On January 18 in Prince George the Spartans defeated the Timberwolves 75-57.
  • TWU is currently on a five-game winning streak against UNBC.
  • The Spartans are currently 9-13 lifetime against the Timberwolves.
  • Belvin and Doerksen are the only two Spartans to break the 40-point mark in a single game scoring.
  • Belvin's 43 points are the most scored in a Canada West conference game this season. The previous high was 36 by Calgary's Nate Petrone against Manitoba on January 18.
  • Belvin is now tied for 22nd in Canada West history for most points in a game. The record of 64 is held by Calgary's Richard Bohne. Which he set at UBC on January 28, 1995.
