ROCK HILL, South Carolina– Both Trinity Western women's teams had a solid end to the championship to finish in the top seven of the Collegiate Disc Golf National Championships Saturday at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
The pairing of second-year
Hannah Porter (Lethbridge, Alta.) and first-year
Zion White (Vernon, B.C.) had a solid finish with three birdies, two bogeys, and a double bogey to shoot one over and finish the final round at 61 on a difficult Camp Canaan course. Together with really good results in singles and consistently solid play in rounds two and three, the pair finished the event in fifth place overall, at two strokes under par.
The Spartans' second pair, of third-year
Joyce Leung (Surrey, B.C.) and first-year
Verity White (Vernon, B.C.), shot a round of 64 on the final day, to finish with an overall score of 10 over par, good enough for a seventh-place finish.
QUOTABLE
Trinity Western head coach Chris Hartmann
"Overall, a very successful National tournament for the Spartans disc golf program with two of four women making the Div I top 16 in singles and playing in the singles final, in a field of 60 women. Going into the event our program was ranked eighth so having teams finish in the top seven is a pretty big accomplishment. Both teams played consistently well all week limiting the inevitable rough patches to just a hole or two before getting things back on track."
"These last six days here have been long with hot and very humid weather and I'm proud of how the team prepared for this and kept emotional energy levels high right to the final hole, despite physical and mental exhaustion playing a role late in rounds the last couple days."
