SPARTANS FALL TO BRANDON BOBCATS

LANGLEY, British Columbia. – The Brandon Bobcats broke a 23-match losing streak to the Trinity Western Spartans with a 3-1 win Friday night at the Healthy Living Centre in Brandon Man. The 11-25, 25-23, 25-20, 29-27 loss drops the No.5 Spartans to 8-5, while the win improves the Bobcats to 2-11.
 
Fifth-year middle Kaylee Plouffe (Sherwood Park, Alta.) with 14 kills,12 digs, and five blocks, and four aces, second-year Sienna Driedger (Grunthal, Man.) with 12 kills, four aces, and two blocks, fourth-year outside Maryn Boldon (Okotoks, Alta.) with 12 kills and 17 digs led the Spartans. Cassidy Hauta with 14 kills, nine digs, three aces, and two blocks, and Brynn Wildeboer with eight kills and two aces led the Bobcats.
 
TWU second-year setter Tayana Dmitruk (Surrey, B.C.) ran the Spartan attack, finishing with 35. Brandon's Carly Thomson finished with 28 set assists.

The Spartans will finish off the weekend series with the Bobcats at the Healthy Living Centre tomorrow night at 6:45 p.m. (CT). The match can be seen live on Canada West TV.
 
AS IT HAPPENED
The opening set was even at 9-9, but TWU would go on a 14-1 run to break the set open on their way to a 25-11 opening set win. TWU hit at .240 (9-3-25), while Brandon hit at -.167 (4-9-30).
 
Brandon came out in the second set and took control early to lead 16-10. The Bobcats maintained their lead to 24-18 before the Spartans rallied to trail 24-23 with five straight points. But TWU was unable to get even as Brandon evened the match 1-1 with a 25-23 win. The Spartans hit at .314 (14-3-35), while the Bobcats hit at .286 (15-5-35).
 
The Bobcats were again the better of the two teams in the third set, taking an 18-7 lead before taking the set 25-20 after a late TWU push. TWU hit at .121 (11-7-33), while Brandon hit at .433 (15-2-30).
 
The fourth set was even throughout with the teams tied at 10-10, and 21-21. The Spartans looked like they had the set with a 24-22 lead, but the Bobcats were able to take the next two points to tie the set at 24-24. TWU again had set points at 25-24, 26-25, and 27-26 before Brandon rallied with three straight points to take the set 29-27 and the match 3-1. TWU finished the night hitting at .100 (17-11-60), while Brandon finished at .077 (12-8-52).

  • The Spartans finished the night hitting at .176 (51-24-153), while the Bobcats finished at .150 (46-24-147).
  • TWU had the edge in blocks 11-7, digs 71-61, and service aces 10-9.

  • Brandon is led by Stephanie Miller, who is averaging 1.93 kills per set and 2.36 digs per set.
