SPARTANS FALL SHORT IN OVERTIME TO THE THUNDERBIRDS

LANGLEY, BC  – The Trinity Western Spartans fell 6-5 in overtime to the UBC Thunderbirds in their home opener.

Danylo Korzhyletskyi (Kyiv, Ukraine) got the Spartans on the board late in the first period, making it 2-1 for the Thunderbirds.

TWU carried that momentum into the second period, scoring twice to keep the game close. Rookie Riley Joslin (Langley, B.C.) scored his first goal of the season. Mikhailo Simchuk (Kyiv, Ukraine) took advantage of the power play midway through the period, bringing the Spartans within one at 4-3.

Nicco Camazzola (Burnaby, BC) opened up the third period with a goal to tie the game. 14 seconds later Mikhailo Simchuk (Kyiv, Ukraine) scored his second goal of the game to put the Spartans in the lead 5-4. UBC responded and tied up the game 5-5, forcing them into overtime.

In the end, UBC's Zeke Nicholson scored the overtime goal, defeating the Spartans.

QUOTABLE
Ben Walter, TWU Head Coach
"We told the players that there's a lot to like from tonight. Obviously, we gave up a little bit too much defensively. I thought we just made a couple mistakes at certain times that they capitalized on, but I really liked our game, especially in the third period. We had a lot of energy and the guys played hard. I am happy with that. I think we're showing what kind of team we can be. The fact that we can hang with anyone, we can push with anybody. We've got a lot of depth within our group and have some fresh legs that can go in tomorrow. It's a quick turnaround, so I think that'll be an advantage for us."
