SPARTANS BEAT UBC FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 3 YEARS

LANGLEY, BC  – The Trinity Western Spartans defeated the UBC Thunderbirds 4-1 on Saturday afternoon, earning their first win over UBC since 2023. First-year goaltender Grace Deveau (St. Albert, AB) made an impressive U SPORTS debut, stopping 48 of 49 shots to lead the Spartans to victory.

Kyra Anderson (Regina, SK) started the Spartans early with the first goal of the game at 2:51. Keelyn Pisani (Sturgeon County, AB) scored her first goal late in the period. The Spartans finished the first period 2-0.

This momentum continued into the second period with two more goals being scored. Pisani put another goal on the board for the Spartans, assisted by Michela Naccarato (Edmonton, AB). Less than 3 minutes later Kamryn Reiber (Okotoks, AB) got the puck past UBC's goalie. This was her first goal in her U Sports career as a Spartan.

The Spartans held a 4-0 lead into the third period. UBC's Jaylyn Morris managed to get a goal in on a powerplay midway through the third period.

After a rough and passionate game the Spartans won 4-1. This is a monumental win for the program and the players.

TWU first-year goaltender Grace Deveau (St. Albert, SK) made 48 saves while UBC goaltender Mya Lucifora made 17 saves and UBC goaltender Ella Dunham-Fox made 3 saves.

QUOTABLE
Peter Hay, TWU Head Coach
"We challenged them in a video session before the game and they could have taken that as a very negative video but they decided to be challenged and execute the little things that we needed to do to win today, and every single player executed it very well. They all bought in and played really hard. I couldn't be more proud of Kamryn getting her first goal as a player that played big minutes for us this weekend. It was a huge game from Grace Deveau, who played her first U sport game and got her first win. As a coach, this is also my 1st win against UBC, which is an absolute huge undertaking and a change of the tide a little bit as we go into the future with a very bright young group of players that have proven they can play with anybody and beat anybody now. It is a huge boost in confidence, knowing that you believe, and now we've just proved it. I couldn't be more excited for this team and program, and just a privilege to be part of this with the girls."
