SASKATOON – Trinity Western fifth-year pole vaulter captured the fifth Canada West medal of his Spartans career, winning silver after clearing 4.75m Friday at the Saskatoon Fieldhouse.
Martin Huerta, who has a season's best of 4.90m (2nd in U SPORTS), took home silver at the conference meet for the fourth year in a row, after having captured CW gold in 2022. Brother
Sebastian Martin Huerta was sixth on Friday after clearing 4.40m.
In the first day of the heptathlon, Spartans star
Dajean Clarke opened the conference meet with a strong showing, putting himself in first place through four events with 3,015 points. The defending Canada West champion finished first in three of the four events – he only finished second to teammate
Brandon Gremaud in shot put – to open a 252-point lead over second place overall after the first day of competition.
Along the way, Clarke solidified himself in the Canada West heptathlon record books, setting a new mark in long jump with a mark of 7.00m, bettering his own CW record of 6.88m. He also equaled the 60m record in the heptathlon with a time of 7.08. Clarke bettered his Day 1 total from his gold medal-winning 2025 performance, when he scored 2,988 points, by 27 points. Gremaud, who was the Canada West heptathlon champion in 2023, sits fourth after the first day, with 2,597 points.
On the track,
Danny Earles ran a U SPORTS qualifying time in the preliminaries, stopping the clock at 34.46 for a converted time of 33.90. With his national championship qualifying time locked in, Earles, who was nursing an injury, sat out the 300m final.
On the women's side, Eileen Noordam had the Spartans best result of the day, finishing fifth in shot put with a throw of 12.62m. Erica Udoh was 11th in shot put with a throw of 10.66m.
Competing in pole vault at the CW championships for the first time, Sheleena Wiley finished sixth after going over 3.35m.
With TWU now competing in NAIA for indoor and outdoor track and field, the Spartans sent just eight athletes to the Canada West Championships this year.
