SPARTANS RALLY OVER DINOS

CALGARY – The Trinity Western University women's volleyball team had a slow start on the road in Calgary, but the No. 3 ranked Spartans rallied to defeat the University of Calgary 3-1 at the Jack Simpson Gym Friday night.

"I'm really pleased with how the team played tonight we played will in a though gym to play in.. We did a really good job with our blocking and our defence. And this is one of the first games that we really got our offence going and were able to find some rhythm and were able to hit at a high efficiency that put a lot of pressure on our opponents," commented TWU head coach Ryan Hofer. "We had a lot of good performances all around and it was a really good team effort."

After dropping the first set 25-23, TWU turned up their play to take the next three sets 25-9, 25-20, 25-21. The win improves TWU to 4-3, while the loss drops Calgary to the same 4-3.

Leading the way for the Dinos was second-year hitter Ali Woolley. She had a team-high 14 kills in the match along with nine digs. Jana Ogle recorded another nine kills from the right side and had 12 digs. Libero Courtney Davis picked up a game-high 15 digs.

For the Spartans, second year outside Sophie Carpentier (Ottawa) scored a game-high 15 kills and recorded 10 digs. Fourth year left-sideRoyal Richardson (Rockey Mountain, Alta.) had another 13 digs for Trinity Western. Fourth year setter Lauren Moncks (Standard, Alta.) recorded a career best and game-high 43 assists in the match.

In the first, the Dinos took the lead from the get-go in front of a big crowd at the Jack. The Spartans finally found a way to tie it at ten with a block from Perrin. Despite Trinity Western taking over the lead for a few points, the Dinos led 16-15 at the technical timeout. The second half of the set saw the Dinos not allowing the Spartans to make the comeback or take the lead and Woolley's kill would end the set 25-23.

The second set was much different for Calgary as Trinity Western was off to an 8-3 lead, forcing the Dinos to call an early timeout. The timeout didn't do much to help the Spartans extended their lead to 16-5 at the technical break. TWU went on to easily take the second set 25-9 while holding the Dinos to a negative hitting percentage (-.182).

Trinity Western continued their strong play in the third set. Shutting down all of Calgary's big hitters including Woolley and Ogle, the Dinos had trouble generating offence to start the set. The Spartans' defence was strong again as they headed into the technical with a 16-6 lead. After the timeout, the Dinos rallied to close the gap, getting within four points, but the Spartans would prevail in the set 25-20.

The fourth set was tight through to the technical timeout, with the Spartans leading 16-14. Out of the break TWU quickly took control of the final set to jump out to a 22-18 lead. The teams would side-out for the remaining points as the Spartans took the final set 25-21.

The Spartans will look for the sweep tomorrow night when they face the Dinos again at 6 p.m.
