RECORD NIGHT FOR RICHARDSON LEADS TWU TO WIN OVER CALGARY
CALGARY – The No. 3 Trinity Western women's volleyball team wrapped up a weekend sweep on the road against Calgary with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-16) win Saturday at Jack Simpson Gym.
Led by Royal Richardson who had 20 kills, the Spartans improved on Friday's four-set win and were in full control over the final two sets en route to the three-set victory. Richardson's 20 kills set the TWU record for kills in a three-set match, breaking the previous record, which was set by Alicia Van Huizen Feb. 14, 2008 against Alberta.
As a team, TWU (5-3) hit .367 while holding Calgary (4-4) to just .140. The Spartans also had 11 blocks to Calgary's four.
After Richardson, the Spartans Casie Gano (Sundre, Alta.) tied her career-high with seven kills while Sophie Carpentier (Ottawa) andChelsea Tancon (Courtenay, B.C.) each added six kills. Libero Kristen Moncks (Standard, Alta.) picked up 10 digs while Lauren Moncks(Standard) recorded a game-high 33 assists.
Ali Woolley recorded 14 kills for the second night in a row to lead the Dinos in scoring. Maura Hayes added seven kills of her own and a team-high nine digs. Setter Jordhynn Guy picked up 31 assists in the loss and seven digs.
Both teams battled it out in the first set with some tight points on either side of the court. Woolley had seven kills after the first, leading all players, but it was the Spartans that got the best of it as they went on to win it 25-21. Both setters accumulated 13 assists in the first set.
Like the previous night, the Dinos had trouble in the second set, coming out flat. The Spartans found a way to shut down Calgary's biggest threat in Woolley. The Dinos hitting percentage dropped to 0.086 while Trinity Western, hitting .353, found a way to capitalize, winning the second set easily 25-16.
In the third set, TWU, hitting .440 as a team, continued to dominate en route to another nine-point win. Big pick-ups on defence from Moncks and some huge blocks up front proved to be the difference as the Spartans completed the sweep.
The Spartans will host the Regina Cougars next weekend while the Dinos will head out to Vancouver to take on the No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds.
Game Notes: The Spartans played without starting outside Alicia Perrin (Creston, B.C.) due to injury…TWU had six aces to Calgary's three.
