GUELPH RALLIES TO EDGE SPARTANS AT TINDALL INVITATIONAL
KINGSTON, Ontario – The Trinity Western men's basketball team was unable to hold off Guelph in the dying seconds as the Gryphons rallied late to earn a 73-70 win over the Spartans Sunday in the Tindall Invitational at the ARC Main Gym.
With the Spartans leading late in the game, Guelph's Daniel Dooley hit a three-pointer off the dribble before draining four consecutive free throws to tie and then gain the lead.
The Spartans, who are 1-4 in the preseason, led 70-68 with 11 seconds left, but Dooley's four free throws gave the Gryphons the lead and a Trevor Thompson free throw put the game to bed at 73-70.
After the teams were knotted 31-31 at halftime, the Spartans took control of the contest in the latter stages of the third quarter and went ahead by as much as 14 points midway through the final frame. However a furious Guelph comeback, which included a 14-2 run, saw the Gryphons escape with the three-point win.
Justin Bakuteka (Toronto) led TWU with a game-high 19 points while Denny McDonald (Mississauga, Ont.) added 13 points. First-year TWU forward Nick Tancon (Comox, B.C.) had a game-high 10 rebounds.
Dooley and Jack Beatty each had 16 points to lead the Gryphons.
The Spartans were hampered by turnovers as they had 30 turnovers in the game to the Gryphons 16.
Both teams finished the Tindall Invitational with a 1-2 record.
McDonald was named to the tournament all-star team as he put up 38 points and hauled in 23 rebounds over TWU's three games, including a 15-point, 11-rebound double-double against Queen's.
The Spartans next preseason game is Oct. 9 against Fraser Valley at Semiahmoo Secondary at 7:15 p.m.
