SPARTANS OPEN WEEKEND WITH TEAM EFFORT ROAD WIN

CALGARY – Led by four players with double-digit points the Trinity Western University Spartans held on to defeat the Mount Royal University Cougars 61-57 in Canada West women's basketball Friday night in Calgary. The Spartans, who have three games left in the season, move to5-14, while the loss drops the Cougars to 1-18.

"That was a battle from start to finish! We were able to pull away a few times but Mount Royal found a way to get back in the game. For us to have four players in double digits is a really positive sign, that the team is creating great looks and making shots. Our challenge continues to be when teams are able to slow us down and force us into the half-court, we just need to execute and take care of the basketball better," commented TWU head coach Cheryl Jean-Paul. "There are definitely adjustments we need to make, both from a coaching perspective and from a player perspective, to help us finish the game better and we look forward to another battle tomorrow."

Rookie forward Kayla Gordon (Prince George, B.C.) with 14 points and eight rebounds, fourth year guard Chantelle Martin (Surrey, B.C.) with 14 points and six rebounds and fifth year guard/forward Janelle Traber (Abbotsford, B.C.) with 14 points and four rebounds led the scoring for the Spartans, while fourth year forward Laurissa Weigl (Stony Plain, Alta.) had another double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to go with four steals and three assists.

Jordan McLean with 13 points, Angela Driscoll with 11 points and six assists, Danica Rybachuk with 11 points and Carrie Campbell with 12 rebounds and nine points led the Cougars.

The Spartans started the contest well and led 20-14 after the first quarter of play. TWU expanded the lead to 30-18 before MRU responded to close the half with a 11-2 run to trail the Spartans 32-29 at the half.

Trinity Western broke open the game in the third quarter outscoring Mount Royal 21-12 to take a 53-41 lead into the final frame.

Over the final six minutes of the game the Cougars made a significant run at the Spartans. Trailing by 10 points, 59-49, the Cougars rallied to trail by four points, 61-57, with 37 seconds remaining.  MRU got a steal on TWU's next possession, but were unable to convert as the Spartans held on for the road win.

The two teams will play again tomorrow night in Calgary. Tip-off at Mount Royal University's Kenyon Court is set for 5 p.m. MST.
