Box Score LANGLEY, British Columbia – The No. 5 Trinity Western women's volleyball continued to roll in as the Spartans won their 10th straight match with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-23) win over visiting MacEwan Friday at the Langley Events Centre.
Led by Elly Wendel (Caronport, Sask.), who had 10 kills, three blocks and an ace, the Spartans improved to 13-4 on the season. The loss drops MacEwan to 7-10.
Hosting MacEwan for the first time since the Edmonton school entered the CIS, the Spartans hit .209 as a team and held the game's momentum largely throughout the night.
With TWU on match point, Wendel capped her best night as a Spartan with the winning kill.
For the Spartans, Sophie Carpentier (Ottawa) added nine kills, two aces and a match-high seven digs, while Katelyn Devaney (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) had a nearly flawless evening with five kills, two aces, four blocks and an .833 hitting percentage. Setter Nikki Cornwall (Coquitlam, B.C.) had 26 assists.
"Elly had a great night and Katie Devaney had a great night attacking and blocking," said Spartans coach Ryan Hofer. "I thought Nikki had a really good night as well. But overall, it was just a really good effort from our whole team."
MacEwan's Cassidy Kinsella led the visitors with 10 kills, four blocks and six digs. Setter Rebecca Martin had 16 assists and Karly Edgar added six digs.
The Spartans hit .209 while MacEwan hit .080. TWU finished with eight blocks to MacEwan's 5.5.
"MacEwan is a scrappy team and they're really good," Hofer said. "They have a never say die attitude and they get a lot of balls up and they really made us work for it tonight. Any lead we had was vulnerable. They came back and closed a lot of gaps. I was pleased with the way we served tonight and how we stayed aggressive."
The Spartans went up 17-12 in the first set and looked in control. But MacEwan responded with a 7-0 run to turn the tables and give the visitors a two-point edge. However, TWU responded with a 6-0 run that put the Spartans back up by four. With TWU up 24-22, a Cornwall ace finished the set in the Spartans favour.
In the second set, TWU took an early 10-5 lead and the Griffins were unable to rally. The Spartans pushed its advantage to six points, at 15-9, before cruising to a 10-point win.
In the third set, the Spartans took a 14-9 lead after a block from Wendel. TWU maintained its five-point lead at the technical timeout and, similar to the first set, looked in control. However, MacEwan once again battled back and got within one point in the late stages. But the Spartans held the Griffins off just long enough to get the win.
The teams will play in the rematch Saturday at 5 p.m. at the LEC.
Game Notes: The Spartans haven't lost since a five-set setback on Oct. 31 against Manitoba…Carly Hamilton (Calgary), who has dealt with concussions for parts of the last two years, was making her first start at home since a Canada West quarter-final match against Calgary on Feb. 15, 2013…after earning double digits in kills for the first time as a Spartan last Saturday against Regina, Wendel was up to the task for a second straight night Friday.
