SPARTANS GET ROAD WIN OVER NO. 6 CASCADES

Box Score

ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University women's soccer team used goals from fourth year forward Krista Gommeringer (Calgary) and fifth year midfielder Ali Oliverio (Calgary) to defeat the No. 6 ranked University of the Fraser Valley 2-1 Tuesday night at Abbotsford Secondary Field in Abbotsford, B.C.

"I'm proud of the way we defended after they scored. Great corporate effort and great work rate from our group tonight. Fraser Valley is a good team they are aggressive and they have talent, so it will be another great battle on Tuesday," commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "We had a number of strong individual performances as well. Kat Chin stepped up and played excellent in midfield. Was a handful with her defensive work-rate. She made it hard for the other team to create any flow. Krista was excellent her ability on the ball and to finish chances was what we have come to expect from her. And Seina was a spark for us off of the bench tonight."

TWU keeper Ally Williamson made three saves to improve the Spartans record to 6-1-2 and extended TWU's unbeaten streak to eight games. UFV's Kayla Klim made four saves in the loss as the Cascades drop to 6-2-1. The Spartans now sit in second place in the Canada West Pacific Division with 20 points, while Fraser Valley is in fourth spot with 19 points.

Krista Gommeringer opened the scoring in the 36th minute to put TWU up 1-0 at the half. Ali Oliverio scored the game winner in the 62nd minute to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead. Fraser Valley's Danica Kump made the game tight down the stretch with the lone Cascades goal in the 88th minute.

In a rematch of last season's Canada West finals, the Cascades had a great chance in the opening minute. Kump, a fourth-year midfielder, took the ball down the right wing and crossed it into the box for Monika Levarsky at point-blank range. She wasn't able to make solid contact, though – the ball brushed off her forehead and continued on through the box.

In the third minute, Gommeringer took a feed from Jenaya Robertson and tested Cascades keeper Kayla Klim from the right, but Klim was equal to the task.

Gommeringer broke through in the 36th minute. Seina Kashima crossed the ball into the box from the left wing, where Klim and Spartan forward Rachel Hutchinson contested for possession. Hutchinson won out as the ball fell to the near post where Gommeringer was waiting. She had an easy touch into the net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Gommeringer's eventful night continued as she drove a free kick on goal in the 62nd minute. Klim got to the ball and punched it away, but Oliverio was first to the ball and drove the rebound into the top of the net.

The Cascades answered back in the late going. Tristan Corneil cracked the ball on goal from 30 yards out, and it dipped in front of TWU keeper Ally Williamson, whose only move was to push the ball away from goal. A trio of Cascade attackers swarmed the ball with Kump getting the final touch before it spun over the goal line.

The Spartans will have the return match with the Cascades at TWU on Tuesday, October 13 at 5 p.m. at Rogers Field.

Match Notes: TWU outshot UFV 9-6…the Cascades had a 6-0 edge in corner kick…
