SPARTANS EARN CONVINCING WIN OVER VISITING COUGARS

Box Score

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The No. 2 Trinity Western women's volleyball team continued its winning ways, as the Spartans beat Regina 3-0 (25-10. 25-23. 25-15) to complete a weekend sweep of the Cougars Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.

For the second night in a row, TWU (8-0) bounced the Cougars (0-10) in three sets and, while hitting .342 as a team and out-blocking the Cougars 10-5, the Spartans kept their perfect record intact.

An injury to Sophie Carpentier (Ottawa) late in the first set seemed to momentarily derail the Spartans but, after a close second set, TWU recovered to put together a strong third set effort to wrap up the win.

TWU was led by Elly Wendel (Caronport, Sask.), who had 13 kills, while Rowyn Neufeld (Richmond, B.C.) had nine kills and Katelyn Devaney (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) added six kills. Wendel and Devaney also each collected five blocks.

The Cougars were led by Tori Glynn, who had nine kills, and Diana Lumbala, who had six kills.

"I loved how we started. Early on, that was some of the finest volleyball I've seen this team play yet," said Spartans coach Ryan Hofer. "We came out passing, serving, blocking and attacking. It was a really good first set for us. After we got that through that second set, with Sophie out, I think we showed our depth. We're deeper than just one player. We have a group of young ladies who can go out there and play in a bunch of different positions and play solid and really keep us rolling in the right direction."

The Spartans opened the match on fire and hit .478 as a team as they cruised to a 15-point win. Wendel had a team-high five kills to lead TWU in the set.

With Carpentier out, the second set took a turn towards the Cougars. With TWU committing seven serving errors, the set was close throughout and featured nine lead changes. However, late in the set, the Spartans pushed forward to take it 25-23.

"Sophie's injury seemed to affect us mentally and it came in the form of our serving," Hofer said. "We missed seven serves and I don't know if we were a little bit shaken by her injury, but Sophie brings more than just her attacking. She's a leader on the court. She's a great serve receiver. She's an awesome server and her defence is coming along. She brings a lot of stability to our floor that we had to figure out."

In the third set, the Spartans once again found their rhythm and charged ahead, hitting .357 as a team, and rolling to a 10-point win. Wendel added four kills to her total and the Spartans pulled away early. Lumbala collected five kills for Regina, but the rest of the Cougars only earned two kills collectively.

The Spartans are back on the court next weekend when they travel to play MacEwan Nov. 20-21. The Cougars return home to host Regina.
