Box Score WINNIPEG – The No. 5 ranked Trinity Western University Spartans completed their regular season schedule with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-8) victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday afternoon at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.
The Spartans end the regular season with a 19-5 record. Winnipeg with the loss ends their season with a record of 8-16.
Fifth year middle Alicia Perrin (Creston, B.C.) had 10 kills, with no errors for a hitting percentage of .714. for the Spartans. Fifth year outside Royal Richardson (Rocky Mountain House, B.C.) also had 10 kills and a team leading nine digs.
Chelsea Jones and Tia Boroski had four kills each to lead the Wesmen. Boroski led the team with a match high 11 digs.
Second year setter Nikki Cornwall (Coquitlam, B.C.) finished the night 21 set assists for the Spartans, while Ellina Domnidou led the Wesmen with 14 set assists.
I was really pleased with the team tonight," said Spartans coach Ryan Hofer. "They played solid and everyone who got an opportunity to play, played really well. I'm glad that we finished the regular season with a good win to help us prepare for post-season. Now we're looking forward to the playoffs."
The opening set started out close in the opening stages until the Spartans went on a run to take a 13-6 lead. A kill by Sophie Carpentier (Ottawa) sent the Spartans into the technical timeout with a 16-8 lead. Trinity Western eventually closed out the opening set by a 25-14 margin.
In set number two the Spartans jumped out to an early 8-2 lead. Winnipeg found their game soon after going on a 6-2 run to cut the Spartan lead to 10-8. Winnipeg continued to put pressure on the Spartans and managed to tie the set at 11-11. The Wesmen momentum was short lived as the Spartans reeled off five straight points to take a 16-11 lead at the technical timeout. The Spartans went on to win the set 25-17.
The Spartans were never challenged in the third set, leading 16-5 at the break. Trinity Western went on to win the set 25-8.
Trinity Western finished the night hitting 39.8, while Winnipeg finished at 1.1 percent.
