TORONTO – In a rematch of last year's CIS quarter-final, the Trinity Western men's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-21) win over Ryerson Monday at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Playing in the Maple Leaf Gardens building, the Spartans rallied from a bit of slow start to earn their fifth win in seven preseason games.

"The guys battled tonight and showed some resiliency," said Spartans coach Ben Josephson. "We were a little bit late for warm-up and we rushed the guys through it, so we started off a little slow. But our guys did a great job of trying to get one per cent better every rally. That was the battle cry and so by the end of the first set, they had really nice rhythm and were able to separate the match. It was also a pretty good serving night for us. We didn't miss as much as we have been, but we still applied good service pressure. Ryan Sclater was fantastic for us tonight. He carried us emotionally and ability wise and was just great."

Following the three-match set, the teams played a fourth set which Ryerson won 25-18.

Last year, in the CIS quarter-final match, the Spartans won in four sets over the Rams.

TWU will now play Guelph Tuesday at 8 p.m. (ET).
