SPARTANS DEFEAT LETHBRIDGE, EARN FIRST WIN OF PRESEASON

Box Score CALGARY – The Spartans women's basketball team continued preseason play with a 72-59 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns in Calgary. 
 
Kianna Wiens (Regina, Sask.) led the way for TWU with 20 points and five rebounds, while Nicole Fransson's (Edmonton) 13 points and game high 10 rebounds helped guide the Spartans to their first win of the preseason. 
 
The Spartans jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, as they led 13-8 after the first quarter and 38-23 after the second.
 
TWU rounded out the game with a 13-point third quarter and 21-point fourth to win by 13 over the Pronghorns.

"We've been moving forward and improving every game that we've played this pre-season. We had to get better in end of game situations with the lead and I thought we showed more maturity then even a few days ago. We want to keep building on this win."
 
NOTABLE
  • The Spartans were coming off a 64-54 loss at home against Regina on Wednesday (Oct. 23).
  • TWU closes out its preseason schedule on Sunday (Oct. 27) taking on Mount Royal on the road.
  • Historically the Spartans improved to 6-2 over their last eight games against the Pronghorns dating back to November 15, 2014.
 
About Spartan Athletics
As official members of U SPORTS, the Spartans currently compete in 11 sports in the Canada West conference, including women's and men's soccer, volleyball, basketball, cross country and track & field, as well as women's rugby sevens. TWU also competes in the British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) in men's hockey and as an independent team in men's rugby. The men's and women's hockey programs will begin playing in Canada West and U SPORTS in 2020-21. Since TWU entered U SPORTS in 1999, the Spartans have won 12 U SPORTS team championships and 27 Canada West team championships and two BCIHL championships.
