SPARTANS HEAD HOME WITH TWO WINS

CALGARY, Alberta – The Trinity Western Spartans finished their weekend trip to Calgary with a 66-62 win over the Mount Royal Cougars Sunday afternoon at the University of Calgary. The Spartans will now head into the start of the Canada West season next week on a two game winning streak after defeating the Lethbridge Pronghorns 72-59 Saturday night.
 
Third year guard Kianna Wiens (Regina, Sask.) with 16 points, six assists and five rebounds, and second year forward Nicole Fransson (Edmonton) with 16 points and eight rebounds led the Spartans attack. While Charity Marlatt with 17 points and five rebounds, and Maddison Hooper with 10 points and nine rebounds led the Cougars attack.
 
The game was close throughout. TWU trailed 15-13 at the end of the first quarter. MRU extended their lead to seven points, 26-19, with 3:20 remaining in the half. But TWU came on strong to end the half with a 13-5 run to led 32-31 at the half. The third quarter was tight with the two teams tied at 48-48 heading into the final frame. Neither team led by more four points in the final 10 minutes with TWU taking the contest 66-62.

• The Spartans had a 44-34 edge in rebounding
• Trinity Western finished the night with 21 turnovers, while Mount Royal finished with 15 turnovers.
• The Spartans shot 42.9 percent (24-56), 40 percent (4-10) from the three point line, and 73.7 percent (14-19) from the foul line. While the Cougars shot 38.1 percent (24-63), 28 percent (7-25), and 50 percent (7-14) respectively.
• TWU outscored MRU 19-6 on second chance points, while the Cougars had a substantial edge in points off of turnovers, 29-9.
• The Spartans bench outscored the Cougars bench 23-17.
• TWU is 7-1 lifetime in conference play against MRU.
